The corrugated (cardboard) packaging industry is strategically important to UK manufacturing. It provides vital products and services to thousands of companies, large and small, and is therefore an excellent barometer of the pressure UK manufacturing is under.
What is the corrugated packaging industry concerned about?
Decline in the manufacturing sector is not inevitable. UK manufacturing has changed out of all recognition in recent years through its investment in new technologies and highly skilled workforce.
So what can MP’s and policy-makers do for us?
Take a positive long term view about UK manufacturing. Believe it can prosper again. Turn that belief into practical policies:
- Give strategically important new manufacturing industries as much support as possible to get off the ground
- Promote manufacturing in schools and colleges and continue to invest heavily in education and training
- Remove the charge for business rates on empty property
- Introduce more favourable Capital Allowances (not just first year) for capital expenditure
- Reduce significantly the amount of regulation and bureaucracy that manufacturing companies increasingly face
