Two Leading Trade Associations Announce their Co-operation in the Corrugated Case Industry

The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) and the Sheet Plant Association (SPA) are pleased to announce that they will be co-operating in a programme to raise awareness of the benefits of corrugated cardboard as a packaging material.

With a recycling rate of 84% in the UK, Corrugated packaging has an unrivalled environmental record. It comes from a sustainable resource and can be responsibly disposed of in a number of ways, including home composting when recycling facilities are not available.

The CPI Corrugated Sector represents the interests of a range of multi-nationals and independent board manufacturers and converters; the SPA is an Association for independent sheet plants. Together, these organisations represent more than 90% of the UK industry, and this puts them in a strong position to present the benefits of their product to the customer.

“Corrugated packaging is the UK’s favourite packaging material. Its benefits go far beyond the environment when you recognise the combination of simplicity, flexibility and fitness for purpose,” said Andrew Barnetson, Corrugated Sector Manager at the CPI.

“We have a number of initiatives that we will be announcing over the summer,” continued Graham Sutherland, Chairman of the SPA, “it is very important to us all that customers and consumers appreciate the benefits of this unique material”.

Notes to Editors

  • The recycling loop is so efficient that an old box can be recycled, remade and reused in just two weeks.
  • Corrugated packaging has been used in the developed world for over 100 years to ensure product wastage remains below 5%. In comparison, wastage can be as high as 30% in the developing world.
