  • Making Paper Safely (MPS) 2015
    With extensive input from the UK papermaking sector, this guidance is published by the manufacturing sector of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Aimed at employers, managers and users of paper and tissue manufacturing machinery, it provides practical guidance to manage the risks on papermaking machinery and associated tasks and describes the law that applies.

    Changes since the last edition (2005)

    This edition updates references to legislation, standards and links to further guidance;
    The document has been restructured to follow the papermaking process and covers tasks in papermaking as well as the machine itself;
    New sections have been added to cover areas of papermaking machinery/tasks not previously covered.

  • MPS Audit Checklist

    This checklist is for managers and users of paper and tissue manufacturing machinery. It has been produced by the PABIAC Paper and Tissue Industry Delivery Committee and is designed to assist paper mills in carrying out a gap analysis against Making paper safely 2015.

    The checklist is broken down into sections as covered within MPS, and each section contains specific questions.

    The checklist is NOT intended to be a substitute for a suitable and sufficient risk assessment of papermaking machinery. You will still need to ensure that any controls put in place, including those suggested in MPS, reduce the risks from the papermaking processes to an acceptable level. To do this, paper mills need to know:

    where you are now (standard currently achieved);
    where you should be (benchmark); and
    what is the difference and why (risk gap)

  • Rewinding Paper Safely: Safe Use of Reel and Slitting Machines

    This HSE guidance document is aimed at managers and employees working in the paper and board industry. The guidance will help you carry out a risk assessment, compare what you have now with the control measures recommended, and decide what more you need to do.

    Representatives from all the relevant stakeholders within the paper and board industry were involved in the writing of this document and the content has been approved by PABIAC (Paper and board industry advisory committee) as being both workable and achievable.

  • Rewinding Paper Safely Checklist

    This compliance checklist was compiled by a Member company as an aid to auditing its current standard for reeling and slitting machines against the standard ‘Rewinding paper safely’.

    It is not a definitive document; the checklist may not cover all the aspects of ‘rewinding paper safely’ or your own particular circumstances. Companies are therefore encouraged to adapt this according to their individual requirements

  • A practical guide for the control of Legionella and other bioaerosols in paper mill water systems

    This paper industry guidance has been developed by the Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee (PABIAC). It is aimed at duty holders, including employers, and those with health and safety responsibilities for others, to help them comply with their legal duties, and reduce the risk of ill health from exposure to potential legionella bacteria and other bioaerosols in water systems.

    This guidance has been written with input from a range of paper mills, speciality chemical suppliers and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The findings from the HSE commissioned research ‘The microbiology of paper mill process water’ is also referred to within the guidance.

    ‘The Health and Safety Executive endorses the guidance, as it follows a sensible and proportionate approach to managing health and safety’.
