The Paper Industry takes the health, safety and welfare of its employees very seriously, and is constantly reviewing and improving procedures to make the industry even safer.
CPI works in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and trade unions, through the Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee (PABIAC), to agree new policies for the industry. This has resulted in some significant advances in safety for the industry’s employees, more productive working practices for the industry and a significant reduction in the number of working days lost due to accidents.
Within the framework of CPI, health and safety is a high priority which Members value as an integral part of the service it provides. As such, CPI serves the health and safety needs of Member companies, their respective sites and employees by keeping them informed of Health and Safety Regulations and Best Practice and coordinating PABIAC activities.
Since 1998, the Papermaking sector has shown a determined effort to be amongst the best performing industries in manufacturing. By setting hard accident reduction targets and through industry initiatives, statistics display a continuous downward trend in workplace accidents and significant reductions in major injuries.
Monthly Injury statistics are available to Full Members of CPI.
CPI’s Employment/HR service provides Member companies with information and expert guidance on working arrangements, dispute resolution, annual hours, employment law, organisational change and general HR topics.
Advice is provided on the interpretation and application of the National Agreements in the Corrugated and Papermaking sectors. On behalf of the industry, and for the CPI Members that conform to the agreements, CPI’s Employment/HR leads the annual negotiations between the industry and unions on pay and conditions.
As well as keeping up to date on general economic data and data on pay settlements, Employment/HR continues to maintain good working relationships with the Unions’ national and local representatives. Working in partnership with Members and the unions, and within the framework of the National Agreements, Employment/HR plays an important role in resolving Members’ industry relations issues, so helping to maintain the industry’s good industrial relations record.
CPI benefits hugely from the impressive team of technical and sector experts that bring many years of experience in their relations with the industry, government, the media and wider stakeholders.

CPI represents Members at a European level through its work with the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO), European Tissue Symposium (ETS), and the International Confederation of Paper and Board Converters in Europe (CITPA).

Lobbying
Keeping abreast of current political and legislative issues is paramount if CPI is to lobby effectively on behalf of its Members.
CPI has built a considerable network of alliances within UK Government and its Departments, and with MPs with Member Companies in their constituencies. CPI’s experienced staff ensure that Government is kept aware of the industry’s achievements as well as its concerns.
An MPs Briefing is sent to all MPs and UK MEPs three times per year to keep them informed of issues affecting the competitiveness of CPI Members.
CPI responds to all relevant Government consultations. Members are canvassed for their views for lobbying and briefing documents.
CPI produces in-depth industry statistics for its Members, and contributes to European and global data bases. This material is also used to inform CPI’s lobbying activities, demonstrating the points being made to government, and promoting the industry’s achievements.
Regular data is provided on such topics as production and sales, stocks and movements of inventory. Each of CPI’s Sectors can commission bespoke data collection and analyses pertinent to their particular interests and all Sectors receive comprehensive reports on their Health & Safety performance. An annual overview of the industry’s current and historic performance is published as Key Industry Facts, widely distributed alongside the Annual Review. Regular reports are made to CPI’s affiliated European associations for consolidation into a number of summaries of European activity.
In addition, Associate Members receive a monthly headline summary of industry statistics.
